Friends of the Earth and other international networks warn of the EU’s failure to protect against environmental destruction, critiquing President von der Leyen’s annual address for continued support of factory farming and fossil fuel investments. Despite green rhetoric, the absence of a fossil gas phase-out date and focus on new fossil fuel suppliers over renewable energy exacerbate climate challenges. Activists protested outside the European Parliament, decrying the EU’s slow response to climate and nature protection.
Friends of the Earth requested our help to design the protest signs used during the protests that took place outside the European Parliament ahead of President von der Leyen’s speech, condemning the EU’s sluggish action on climate and nature protection. These signs challenged the EU’s rhetoric versus action on climate change.
Ahead of the second EPBD trilogue under the Spanish Council Presidency, 67 civil society organizations, NGOs, trade unions, and youth movements across Europe have united to call for an ambitious and socially just EU Buildings Directive by year-end. The pressing “trilemma” of rising energy costs, a cost of living crisis, and the climate emergency highlights the urgency of making homes and buildings energy-efficient and renewable-based.
We were commissioned to designed a dynamic and unexpected intervention to be placed in front of the European Parliament as a protest against the measures.
As we gathered for the final time this year with the Right to Energy coalition, we reflected on our campaign successes in 2023. Thanks to the tireless advocacy efforts of numerous NGOs and unions, a Ban on Disconnections was successfully included in the Electricity Market Redesign. But our fight for the right to energy doesn’t stop here. Looking ahead, we shared our hopes and aspirations for the upcoming year in a festive atmosphere.
